We got in last night at around midnight very, very tired, but happy to be home. I love my family but three days is about the shelf life to a good visit.

My sisters were great, even the one that just broke up with her long-time bf. (incidentally, I don't think one ever stops wanting to rip out the entrails of someone that hurts one's little sister), and the wee nephew was wonderful. My niece Cass and I bonded over Twilight and she has the BIGGEST fangirl crush on Robert Pattinson. HUGE! Robert Pattinson and the Jonas Brothers. There's something wrong about that....

Alltogether a good Xmas except for that fact that my parents just keep getting older, as parents do, and more unahappy, as. Well. I don't think most parents do? I dunno? They seem to like each other less as time goes on. My mom complains about my dad. He complains about my mom. They ignore each other or snark. It's kinda sad-making.

Still, everyone was there, which rarely happens, and good times were had.

I got this! )

Pretty good if I say so myself. :-)

My mom also brought me a pair of work pants which almost had to go up a size due to the size of my arse.

No, seriously. I always tend to gorge at my mom's house but this year was really in a league of it's own. Check out a list of the sweets, for real. )

So, obviously, there was no hope.

I think I gained at least ten lbs. while I was there. X-p

D is now pretty much accepted which is still kind of strange. We were even able to hold hands, sleep in the same bed, and peck each other on the cheek with no scandal ensuing. It's the small steps. She was kind of sick when we got there but got better and the rest of the visit went okay, health wise.

In other news...

+ We saw Doubt. )

+ D has discovered texting and keeps up a constant click of conversation every few minutes. I have said not much but I notice she is much less growly about my checking LJ. :-)

+ I am watching the NFL playoffs. The Texans won! The Cowboys lost so spectacularly I could hear my dad curse from 300 miles away.

And, wow, Faith Hill. Not who I think of when I think of football but, hey. I hope the good woman got lots of money for it.

+ Btw, I also finished up Breaking Dawn. )

Am now reading Duma Key by Stephen King. It's great so far.

In closing, and the only down side to our trip/vacation we returned to an absolutely FOUL smelling apartment! At first I thought Russell had neglected to change out the cat litter like he said he'd do, and for which we left him a copy of the house key, but no. We had not emptied the trash can. After cleanign out the ice box. :-( The stench was VILE. After opening windows, doors, turning on the fan, and spraying air freshner it is better today. But MAN, that was one of our more spectacular oversights.

Okay, gente. I work tomorrow and this upcoming year promises to be full of ridiculousness and tomfoolery at Chez HPL, but we shall see.

I hope you all had a Feliz Navidad and I'll talk at you later. :-)

We are at my folks in Laredo and the weather is warm enough for me to be in shirtsleeves and sandals. And after all my bitching. *lol* Ah, well.

Benji, my nephew, and the only actual little kid we have (Cass, my niece, is fourteen) is at a park with his dad because he apparently got up at 7:30 and proceeded to drive eveyrone batshit.

We're in a holding pattern until they get back and/or my second sister Ann wakes up.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic day!

In closing, the funniest thing I've heard so far: My sister Ann threw out her back a bit yesterday and asked my father for a muscle relaxant. He had many. My BiL R works for a drs. office so he knows about lots of drugs. After the impressive array of muscle relaxants my dad moved on to anti-depressants.

Dad: I have this, too. *shows economy value sized bottle of Xanax*
Sis: I don't know about that.
BiL: Yeah, I don't think that's a good idea
Sis: Isn't it habit forming?
BiL: Yeah
Dad: Naaah. I take tons of them.

I love my family.

Feliz Navidad, people!

Talk at you later!

*drumroll* Buttery Toffee Cookies!

After a frustrated evening during which I wasted at least two hours and a whole bowlful of batter trying to make these cookies and failing spectacularly I switched to the Buttery Toffee ones and they came out FABULOUS.

I was all set to post about NEVER NEVER using that recipe because it was MADE OF FAIL ARRGH ARRGH....and then I realized I had set the oven to 350 instead of 375. Uhm, yeah. That might be a problem. *headslap*

Oh, well. I have no idea what to do with a pile of undercooked cookies and once-gooey-now-hard candy, but I'm sure I'll think of something. That is what [livejournal.com profile] trashy_eats is for. ;-)

I plan on baking at least one more Buttery Toffee batch and then try the Mocha Truffles once, more, sans extra chocolate chips, and see what happens. I realize I get out at nine and this might be tall order, but we'll see how far i get before faceplanting from fatigue.

In other news...

+ We might have a two bedroom. Meep! We really really NEED a two bedroom, not only because D has accumulated some really nice antiques from her parents house that we have nowhere to put, but, for my sanity, and hers, if she is honest, we just NEED more room. However the rent is. *sigh* It's higher. Quite a bit. I think I can swing it but we'd have to cut down on some stuff or something. We suck at that. The new owner, who has fixed the a couple of machines in the laundry room and seems like a pretty together guy, is going to get back with us after the make-ready is done on the unit we want. I guess we'll see.

+ We had our White Elephant Exchange and Holiday Dessert-A-Rama for our library and I ended up with three pairs of lovely Avon pearl hoop earrings in white, gold, and gray faux pearls. I think the reason so many people order Avon jewelery and end up not wearing it is that the items, for some reason, have really long posts that jabs into the back of your earlobe when worn. And forget talking on the phone with them on! They are way uncomfortable. However, they go with the dress I'm wearing to the System Xmas party tomorrow and I can take them for a few hours. I think I made out ok.

+ I only have about half my xmas presents bought! I still need my mom's, my sister, whose name I got in my family gift exchange, my BiL and my niece. Ergh. I think I'll just give my niece Cass $. She's 14; she won't care. However, I traditionally get my BiL a cool T-shirt and I've not even had time to look. In the past I've gotten him one with Che Guevara, The Clash, and Tony Montana as Scarface.

Alright, gente. It is deadly still here but I've an in-house grant application to finish and a bit of shelving to do.

You all take care and I'll talk at you later!

P.S. The high tomorrow is near 80. Of course.

It is only 9:30 and the morning is already MADE OF FAIL. )

I'd like to go back to bed now, please.

+ Oh, and look! As my coworker went to leave the work room the handle came off in her hand. The renovation of this building is only eight months old. Man, if I get stuck in here today I am not going to be happy. At least I have Cheetos and a potty. It could be worse.

+ However, on the plus side I *am* leaving at noon today because I have an ultrasound on my chest this afternoon. Not that the ultrasound is a plus; they always unnerve me. Having some time afterwards to do more errands, shopping, and possibly bake cookies? Is sorely needed.

+ Speaking of cookies I have narrowed my choices for this year's exchange to: Mocha cookies and Toffee cookies. I've never made them before but the recipes look really simple. I'll let ya'll know how they turned out.

In closing, no matter how irate I was this morning hearing it is hard to be totally grumpy while listening to the dulcet sounds of 'Oh, Christmas Tree' played live on a baby grand. The Amegy Building springs for a pianist in the lobby every winter holiday. It's really cool. :-)

Okay, gente. I must jet.

Ya'll take care and I'll talk at you later!

P.S. It was 70 degrees again yesterday. However there was a delightfully nasty front coming in today so we shall see!
